Jerry Oland Obituary

Jerry Lee Oland, age 83, of Lafayette, IN, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Known for his competitive nature, quick wit, and endless supply of jokes, Jerry, brought light and laughter wherever he went. Jerry, spent 38 years working in manufacturing at Fairfield, where he was known for his strong work ethic, and ability to bring humor into even the busiest days. During that time, he also wore many hats-serving as an IHSAA basketball official, where he called games with fairness and intensity, and working as a real estate agent, helping people find the home of their dreams. After retiring, he drove a bus for City Bus through Purdue's campus, this could have been his favorite job, his kind hearted teasing and cheerful banter with the students was the highlight of his workday. A lifelong sports lover, Jerry enjoyed golf, volleyball, and cheering on his beloved Purdue Boilermakers. He was fiercely competitive-whether on the court, the course, or in a backyard game of croquet ("send 'em")-and he never passed up the chance to turn something friendly into something slightly more serious (with a big grin, of course). That competitive spark served him well on his first trip to Las Vegas in 1987, where he famously won a Corvette-a story that became a fan favorite and was retold often, and with pride. He also loved to gamble, but more than luck, it was his charm and fun-loving spirit that made him the life of the party. Jerry will be remembered for his infectious good mood, his kind heart, and his ability to make people laugh. He never met a stranger and was always willing to give you instructions on most anything. He is survived by his wife Sherry L. Oland, daughter Kris DeHahn (Oland) son Jason Oland (wife Lisa), daughter Kelly O'Brien (Oland) grandchildren Cole (wife Carly), Reghan, Mia, Carter, Jack, and Marley. And a sister, Vicki Oland. He is preceded in death by his parents Thelma & Harold Oland, brothers James and Larry Oland, and 2 grandsons Jacob & Austin Oland. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025 from 1pm-4pm, at The American Legion Post 11. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Almost Home Humane Society, a cause very close to Jerry's heart. Share memories and condolences online at www.hippensteelfuneralservice.com

Jerry was the best friend and neighbor anyone could ask for. I remember us sitting around the campfire in his backyard solving the world´s problems. I also remember his competitive nature whenever we played volleyball, or golf, and even playing cards
