Charles Haywood Obituary

Charles Arthur Haywood
Charles Arthur Haywood was born May 26, 1939, in Cuero, Texas, to Emmitt William and Corinne McAllister Haywood.
He gave his life to Christ at a young age and was a lifelong church servant. After graduating from Daule High School in 1957, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving honorably until 1963. He then attended Prairie View A&M University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees, excelled in football and baseball, and was a member of the 1963 National Championship Football Team. In 2007, he was inducted into Prairie View A&M University's Sports Hall of Fame.
Charles devoted 25 years to the San Antonio Independent School District as a teacher, coach, counselor, and assistant principal. After retiring from SAISD, he served as After School Program Coordinator for the City of San Antonio for ten years. Known for his firm yet caring presence, he was well liked and respected by his students whom he guided with discipline, encouragement, and wisdom.
Faith was his cornerstone. For over 40 years he was a member of New Union Missionary Baptist Church in San Antonio, serving as deacon, choir member, teacher, and Brotherhood leader. After retiring to Houston, he joined Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for 54 years.
Charles was a loyal Cowboys and Spurs fan. He also loved food and was well known for his barbecuing skills. Most of all, he cherished time with family and friends, especially celebrating his grandchildren's milestones.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Emmitt Lee Haywood. He is survived by daughters Sonya Cebrun and Suneese (Derek) Eagleton; grandchildren Jared, Justin, Kennedy, and Derek II; stepson Harold Hardaway and many nieces, nephews, fraternity brothers, and friends.
