DONALD MANGO Obituary

MANGO--Donald F. 58 years old, passed away on April 8th, 2022, at home with his family by his side in Gladstone, NJ. Don is survived by his wife, Patricia, and son Alexander. Don also kept a close chosen family, including his Aunt Lana and Uncle Frank Hernandez, Aunt Theresa Giampaoli, Denise Ambrogio, Aileen and Kraig Peterson, Megan and Ricky Barfuss, and Mitch and Susan Merberg. Don was born on October 24th, 1963, in San Francisco, CA, and raised in Houston, TX, graduating from Rice University Cum Laude in 1985 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He stumbled upon an actuarial assistant job listing in 1986 and applied on a whim, leading him not only to the love of his life, Pat, but also to the world of actuarial science, the industry that would become his second home. After their engagement, Pat and Don moved to New Jersey, where they were married and welcomed their son, Alex. Don loved his family fiercely and completely, but beyond all else, he loved them through actions. He carried an encyclopedic fishing knowledge gained from decades of trips, trained for triathlons and rowing competitions, challenged his wife on the tennis court and his friends on the golf course. Professionally, Don was a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, named CAS Vice President of Research & Development, and served two terms on the CAS Board. He was a board member of NLC Insurance Companies, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst. He traveled the world as a speaker at industry conferences and authored numerous award-winning actuarial papers. Accolades aside, Don would insist the most rewarding parts of his career were the opportunities to "pay it forward," sharing success with others and fostering an environment of mutual learning. As one of his awards reads, quoting Emerson, "the man who can make hard things easy is the educator," and in the final years of his career, Don took this to heart by becoming an adjunct lecturer in actuarial science at Columbia University's School of Professional Studies. He ended his career as Group Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer at Everest Reinsurance Company. Into the love he gave to others, Don poured his purest self, a man of unmatched intelligence and kindness, whose legacy is one of love and trust, of generosity and gratitude. For their help in his final days, the family extends their sincerest thanks to Uplift Nursing. There will be a private service at this time, however plans for a celebration of life will be shared in the coming months. For those who wish, donations in tribute to Don can be made to The Actuarial Foundation, supporting their Actuarial Diversity Scholarship Program. Aloha, our heartfelt condolences go to Pat and Alex and Don's family. Don will be greatly missed by all of Pat's family as well. When Pat's mother, Rose passed on 2015, Don did not seem well, although he was dressed impeccably, of course, with a suit and tie at Rose's wake. Alerted, Steve watched Don with concern, until Don suddenly left the room visibly upset. Steve found Don in the outside hallway, sobbing, and wailing uncontrollably. Steve immediately embraced Don very closely and spoke softly in a calm tone in Don's ear, "Don, I love you for loving my mother so dearly as you are demonstrating now. It's ok, Mom is in a better place after all the suffering she went through." Now Don is with Rose. We share in Pat and Alex's sadness.

Don was one of the wonderful men we have ever known. Our love is with Pat and Alex.

I worked with Don for only a short time but he became a close friend and kindred spirit. Always warm, deprecating, blazingly brilliant and hilarious, Don was a true joy to know and to consider as a friend. With sincere condolences to the Mango family on this tragic loss.

I only worked with Don for 2 years while at American Re, but he had a lasting impact on me as a result of his brilliance, sharp wit, self-deprecating sense of humor, approachability and enthusiasm for life. When running into him at conferences in the years after leaving Am Re, I was pleasantly surprised at how he greeted me so enthusiastically - but that was his nature. I will always remember his engaging presentations and how enthusiastic he was about his subject matter. He was an absolute rock-star in the actuarial field yet still found the time to engage with people on a personal level. I am saddened at the thought of his passing. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I had the privilege of working with Don twice. That Emerson quote in the obituary is absolutely true. Among a lot of very smart people, Don stood out head and shoulders above. But in contrast to many brilliant people, he made the audience smarter and more informed at the end, rather than feeling dumber in comparison. Our industry as a whole, and many of us individually, are better off because he worked with us. He will be missed. God bless his family at this time.

I offer my sincerest condolences to Don's family and friends. I didn't know him personally, but through his written and oral presentations of various actuarial topics, I can say that he represented our shared profession as few others have. It seems that he thought deeply about the matter at hand, pushing beyond widely-held understandings and encouraging new thought from his peers. His observations helped to shaped my own thinking on a number of risk-related matters, and I consider myself a beneficiary of his professional contributions. I know that you all will miss him greatly.

I had the chance to collaborate with Don off and on for 20 years in education and innovation (some of it admittedly disruptive). I will miss the chances to get together for an hour and explore deep thoughts and laugh until my chest hurt often in the same moment. A bright, dynamic mind and a bigger heart. Gone far too soon.

Absolutely staggered to learn of Don´s passing. Though many years have passed, the connection as `family´ remains deeply held in my heart, as do the memories of lively times and travel, and the compassionate care he offered during life´s most trying times. The universe has lost a beautiful soul and intellect. Hopes for healing to Patricia and Alex, and all who loved this wonderful man.
