Thomas G. Magill, M.D., 87, died on Wednesday March 26, 2025, at home after several years of declining health. Born in Manhattan NY on October 17, 1937, the son of the late George T. and Dorothy C. (Diehl) Magill, he was raised in Mt. Vernon NY, until age 14 when his family moved to Wilbraham MA. He attended Wilbraham Academy (now Wilbraham and Monson) where he developed a talent for academics and soccer. Graduation in 1955, Tom entered Dartmouth College, continuing his soccer playing and majoring in Premed. His senior year was combined with the first year of medical school, so he graduated from Dartmouth in 1959 and Dartmouth Medical School in 1960. While at Dartmouth Tom met Marge who became his wife in September 1960, and they moved to Boston for his third and fourth years at Harvard Medical School. The next 6 ½ years were spent in NYC where Tom completed his surgical training at Columbus Presbyterian Hospital.
His military obligation was as a Lt. Commander in the US Navy, serving as the ship's surgeon aboard the USS Saratoga for 13 months and as a staff surgeon for 11 months at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. Returning to Wilbraham with his family in 1970, Tom began a 29-year career in private practice as a general and peripheral vascular surgeon in Springfield MA. Known for his bow ties and technical skills, he was well-respected by his colleagues. Tom held professional memberships in the Hampden District Medical Society, Mass Medical Society, New England Surgical Society, and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
His hobbies included gardening, winetasting, duplicate bridge with Marge, travel, symphony concerts, live theater, Duke basketball, Boston Celtics and New England Patriots games, and tennis, tennis, tennis. A longtime member of the Field Club of Longmeadow, Tom played tennis and paddle tennis several times a week.
Tom leaves his wife of 64 years, Marjorie (Brown) Magill, daughter Cathy and husband Rick Wiscount of Allentown PA, son David and wife Lydia of Waltham MA, grandchildren Eric Wiscount and partner Frank Wolfgram, Stephanie Wiscount, and Christine Magill, his sister Barbara Allen and husband Gordon, brother-in-law Jim Brown and wife Mary, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the care and support of Baystate Hospice these many months. Nurse manager Diane and her team of aides, Brenda, Donna, Sara, Cindy and Susan, volunteers Katie and Dolly, and especially massage therapist Peter with his magic hands. Thank you all.
Tom's visiting hours will be on Wednesday April 2, 2025, from 4pm – 7pm at Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation, 220 N Main St. East Longmeadow MA. Funeral and burial arrangements are private.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tom's memory to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, 1441 Main St., Springfield MA 01103 or Baystate Hospice, 30 Capitol Dr., West Springfield MA 01089.

Dr Magill was one of the first surgeons I worked with as a new nurse long ago. A nice man and talented surgeon. I do remember the bow ties! It sounds like he had a good retirement and full life. My deepest condolences on your loss.

In 1978 as a new nurse graduate, Dr Magill made me a better nurse with his nightly calls on my 3 to11 shift at 10pm wanting to know the details of his post op patients...not that they were just doing fine. Thank you!!! Prayers and hugs to his family.
