Paul Vangsness Obituary

Paul Vangsness
1957 - 2023
Longmeadow, MA
Paul Vangsness, 66, of New Port Richey, FL (and previously of Enfield, CT) passed away on December 24, 2023 from complications due to pancreatic cancer.
He was born on April 6, 1957, the sixth of seven children of the late Norbert and Carmen Vangsness and grew up in Longmeadow, MA. He was educated at Longmeadow Schools and Western New England University.
Paul served his country for four years in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1982 at the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer. He then enjoyed a 30-year career with Hallmark, Inc. holding various managerial positions in maintenance and production, rounding out his tenure as the 3rd Shift Operations Manager. He concluded his full-time working life serving as a consultant to Carando, Inc. of Agawam and Dollar Tree Distribution Center.
Family and friends were everything to Paul and he made friends wherever he went. From the people with whom he went to school, to the people with whom he worked, to the new friends in his Florida neighborhood, Paul was always the upbeat happy guy, keeping everyone laughing and getting along. No one could be with Paul and not smile and his siblings relied on him for his positive attitude. He also went out of his way to lend a helping hand to family and friends of all generations. A clever "Mr. Fix It", his skills resulted in volunteering to complete many projects for others which gave him great satisfaction. He also hosted close friends and his nephews at his homes and always made them feel welcome.
His favorite hobbies were golf and fishing and Florida offered him both all year long. In retirement he moved into a golf community (near 2 brothers), tricked out a new golf cart and played several times a week. Paul was an avid golfer, playing both local and distant courses with close friends and family. He was very proud of his only hole-in-one and his nine eagles over the many years of enjoying the game. He was also an excellent fisherman, especially after finding a charter captain in Florida who introduced him to Gulf of Mexico fishing.
Paul was predeceased by his parents and his sister Marjorie.
He is survived by siblings David and Mark (Diane) of New Port Richey, FL, Peter (Patti) of Medway, MA, Maria Kennedy (Steve) of Longmeadow, MA, and Julie Fradette (Tom) of Centreville, VA. He also leaves his girlfriend Pam Hall of New Port Richey, FL and his former wife Patti McCormack Vangsness of Feeding Hills, MA and 9 nephews, one niece and many cousins and extended family around the country.
A graveside service and celebration of life gathering will be held in the Spring of 2024.

All good memories of the big, gentle, well-humored guy. He was no doubt a great son. His older brother Mark was very nice to me. I'm happy he made a home in Florida. 66 is very young.

Sad to hear this. Grew up on Hazardville rd with his family.
He was taking us kids camping at turner pond in 1970 or 71 and while I was there, I went fishing in pond and while flipping rocks over to find worms, I tried to flip what turned out to be a 55lb Snapping Turtle!! I yelled for help and Paul came, called park service, we ended up tagging it and putting it into Connecticut River , freeing it. IT WAS A STATE RECORD at the time!
I appreciated Paul always for his kindness..He will be missed.
