William Hartigan Obituary

William Blakeslee Hartigan

Boston, MA - HARTIGAN, William Blakeslee age 34, the beloved light of his family and many friends, passed away on January 30th, 2024 from a short but severe battle against depression. William was the son of Anthony and Cecile Blakeslee Hartigan of Moultonborough, NH., and West Palm Beach, FL. He was a graduate of Concord High School, New Hampshire and Cornell University, where he was a member of the Cornell squash team.

William spent a decade with Merrill Lynch in New York, Boston and Concord. He recently was a senior officer at UBS Wealth Management in Manchester.

Will continued his passion for squash into adulthood. He and his partner won the National Doubles Squash title in 2023, and he and his father were finalists in the 2023 Father-Son championship in Greenwich Ct. He was generous with his time mentoring youngsters in the Squash Education Association, a program designed to change the lives of urban youngsters.

William was a member of the University Club Boston, The New York Athletic Club, the Racquet Club of New York, and The Country Club, Brookline.

William lived a sober life for the past fourteen years, during which time he was enthusiastically active in helping others. He believed that the best thing about being sober is that it is a life of service. Those who knew him will always remember the light that he carried and shared so freely with others.

He leaves behind three sisters, Elizabeth Callahan and her husband Chris, and their children Anita and Cecie; his sisters Margaret Hartigan and Ann Hartigan; his uncles Maurice Hartigan, John Gaynor Hartigan, Farlow Blakeslee, and Jefferson Blakeslee; and aunts Edith Kitchin and Kate Blakeslee. He was predeceased by his aunt Mary Anne Schrank , and uncles Vincent A Hartigan, Jr., and Steven Blakeslee. William leaves behind many cousins from both sides of his family.

A Funeral Mass of Celebration will be held at Holy Name Church 1689 Centre St. West Roxbury on Saturday, February 10th at 11am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment private. Donations in William's memory may be made to the SquashBusters, Boston, or the National Alliance on Mental Illness. For online guestbook, pemurrayfuneral.com. Funeral arrangements by P.E. Murray-F.J. Higgins, George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, West Roxbury, MA.

Dear Will,

You shared my greatest victory on a squash doubles court, and I share this terrible defeat with you. There are hundreds of us who would have moved heaven and earth to be with you in your darkest hour, to say "We love you. It's going to be ok. Stay with me, and watch the sun rise again. Just live. Death will come of its own someday. No need to rush." How crushing, and savage, to lose you at such a young age. I can't imagine the pain your parents are going through.

My most sincere condolences to Will's friends and family. I met Will through Boston AA over the past year. I was new and nervous, but Will made sure to find me after a meeting, share his number, and mention that he appreciated hearing me share. There was a generosity of kindness that seemed to imbue Will's every interaction. I certainly felt it. When he spoke in a meeting, he was wise and real, and I knew that he was someone I could look up to. I was always happy to see him in a room when I walked in. We caught up over dinner with a few guys a few weeks back, and he had us in stitches talking about some of the funny characters he met back in Minnesota in his early twenties. I didn't know much about Will outside of AA, but I am not at all surprised to learn more about the impressive life he has lived. Will most certainly carried a light and shared it freely with others. I appreciate greatly that I had the opportunity to get to know him. His life of service has made a difference in mine. God bless, Will. You will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Will when he was running the sober home in Morristown. We met on the front lawn and were chatting when a neighbor came over offering cookies she had made to Will. As he took one, she told him that she had made them with crickets because of their high protein count. Will didn't bat an eye and ate it with gusto -- maybe feigned?
Anyway, he was a delight. He also was a wonderful speaker at the Partnership to End Addiction's gala -- a beacon of light and hope and just generally a wonderful man.

I am so very sorry this has happened. Depression can be such a cruel illness. Holding you in my heart, Pat Aussem

Tony and Cecie-
So very sad to hear about Will´s passing. Concord country club, a second home to so many of us, gave me an opportunity to get to know your son. I was that old man who had the opportunity to play with "the kids" on many occasions. Not only was Will a gifted athlete, but he brought that infectious smile with him every time. I will miss him greatly as will all of his friends. Sincerely, Steve.

I was devastated to see this sad news. He had been a mentor to our son in very early squash days and Tod also knew of him at St Paul´s. I remember chatting with him courtside at around age 12 and being impressed by his thoughtfulness. He was beautiful boy.
He went on to touch so many and it´s an impactful
loss to all he reached.

I loved Will and will miss him greatly. As so aptly noted, he was the light in the room whether visiting our Merrill office when in NYC for a tournament or years on and around the courts at the NYAC. There was no one I´d rather see or be with, always smiling and upbeat. Will was a fantastic person inside and out and a model for us all in how to live and give. May his legacy be that his spirit touch us all, always looking for the bright side and paying it forward as Will did.
