Mary Zizelman Obituary

90, of Madison, passed away February 11, 2024 at the Lantern of Madison. She was born December 9, 1933 in Cleveland to the late Emil and Pauline Hansh.
After high school, where she earned the nickname Mickey, Mary Ann earned a full scholarship to Notre Dame College in South Euclid majoring in high school education. Mary Ann then accepted a teaching position at Hoban Dominican High School where she taught Biology and PhysEd.
Mickey then met Bob and they wed in 1957, going on to have two daughters, Debbie and Shari. After the birth of Debbie, Mary Ann stayed home until her youngest daughter went to kindergarten. During that time, she obtained her elementary education certificate and returned to work teaching 4th grade at their local grade school, Hodge Elementary in Cleveland.
Mary Ann taught at Hodge for many years. She was also the building union representative for the Cleveland Teachers Union and worked hard for good working conditions in the schools. Mary Ann received the Martha Holden Jennings award 3 times for being one of Ohio's finest teachers.
When Hodge Elementary closed, she then went to work at OH Perry in Cleveland. After helping plan weddings and moving to a new home, Mary Ann decided to retire. She enjoyed retirement in many ways: read, golfed, gardened, traveled and was a member of Madison Country Club. Her biggest joy though was her family.
Mary Ann was the best Mom and most loving wife. She was dedicated to her family and involved in all her daughters' activities, vacations and carpooling, and sports activities. She taught her daughters to be kind and generous and helped the girls run a Ronald McDonald carnival annually to donate money to help the Ronald McDonald charities. She was so proud of her husband, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren and always tried her best to support them.
Survivors include her daughters, Debra Holy and Sharyl (Mike) Smith; grandchildren, Kristen (Christopher) McGinness, Kevin (fiancee Kara Nebelski) Holy, Richard (Jillian) Schmuhl and Steven Schmuhl; grandchildren, Allison and Margaret McGinness and Jacob and Dean Schmuhl and many nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends.
Preceding Mary Ann in death are her husband, Robert "Bob" F. Zizelman; siblings, Emil Hansh, Eleanor (John) Slosar and Mildred (Ladd) Zachary and son-in-law, Ralph Holy.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 22, 2024 at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, Ohio 44060. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 23, 2024 at the funeral home. Entombment to follow in All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
Memorial contributions in honor of Mary Ann may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Miss Hansh taught my gym class at Hoban Dominican... Later on , to my delight, I met her again as my children attended O. H.Perry in Cleveland. What a gracious lady.
Rest in peace Mary Ann.

Dear Debbie and Family,

I am sad to hear about the passing of Mary Ann, your dear mother and grandmother. May God rest her soul in peace and may her memory be eternal alongside your beloved departed father and grandfather. Wishing you find much comfort in the cherished moments you shared together and that remembering and celebrating her live will be a source of strength during this difficult time.

I have beautiful memories of your mother from all those times we shared at different occasions, celebrations and picnics. She always had a beautiful smile, a jovial friendly presence and imparted such enthusiasm and good humor, which made our times together a pleasure.

Sending my heartfelt condolences for your loss and healing prayers.

With deepest sympathy,
Adelina Vasilescu

My condolences & sympathy to the families in your loss of mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Zizelman (as I knew her) was one of the best teachers I remember fondly. She taught me many important lessons even as I look back to the 4th grade at Hodge School! I remember your mom "fighting" representing the teachers in the Cleveland Schools during a strike for improving quality of life for all. I believe your mom had an impact on me to become & retire as a labor leader in Lake & Geauga County as well as in representing workers throughout our United States.
I pray "Mrs. Zizelman" finds peace in eternity with Jesus. Amen!
Kindest regards,
Bob Schiebli
