Eleanor Ammons Obituary

Eleanor Poor Ammons, 88, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at The Greens of Weaverville. Mrs. Ammons was born in Buncombe County to the late Marion and Margaret Smathers Poor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hardie William Ammons, Jr. and a sister, Dottie Clark. Eleanor was primarily a stay-at-home wife and mother. Over the years she spent time as a substitute teacher, kindergarten aid, bank teller, delivered flowers for Poor's and Gudger's flower shops, worked at A&P Grocery and was an administrative assistant at Ammons Office Supply. However, her greatest joy was raising her boys and helping anyone in need at any moment, being the hands and feet of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is survived by her two sons, Jim Ammons (Kimberly) of Arden and Steve Ammons of Spartanburg, SC; eight brothers and sisters, Peggy Compton, Linda Tipton (Bobby), Beverly Lee, Robert Poor (Vickie), Don Poor (Kristy), Barbara Sikes, Ken Poor (Ivette), and Brenda Trantham (Donnie); many nieces and nephews; four grandchildren, Stephanie Heller (Russell), Autumn Mckinney, Zachary Ammons (Brittany), and Isaac Ammons (Ashlyn); five great grandchildren, Haylee, Carter, Sadie, Everly, and Blakely Grace and aunt Teenie Smathers Eleanor will be laid to rest by her husband at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. Groce Funeral Home's Lake Julian team is assisting the family.
