Richard NUNNS Obituary

NUNNS, Richard Anthony:
QSM Hon.DMus.
On June 7, 2021, aged 75 years, surrounded by his loving family. Loving husband to the late Rachel Bush, and much loved father and father-in-law of Molly Nunns and Jason Stein, Lucy Nunns and Ben Moser. Treasured Rara of Eva, Leo and Thomas; and Piggy/Richard to Jessica and Koebi. Loved brother and brother-in-law to Chris and Patty, Kate and Adrian Featherstone, and Simon and Katrina; and a loved uncle. Musician, teacher, adventurer throughout Aotearoa and the world – equally comfortable performing to a room full of people as he was adventuring in the great outdoors. Richard has left a gift to Aotearoa through his tireless dedication over more than 40 years to the revival and performance of taonga puoro (traditional Mãori instruments). Richard's last years have been difficult due to illness and the family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who cared for him, especially the wonderful teams at Whareama and The Wood. Messages can be sent to Richard's family, c/- Simplicity Funerals, PO Box 7103, Nelson 7042. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Richard's memory to Nelson Provincial Museum – Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao, 270 Trafalgar Street, Nelson 7010 or PO Box 853, Nelson 7040. These can also be left at the service. A celebration of Richard's life will be held in two parts on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Founders Heritage Park, 87 Atawhai Drive, The Wood, Nelson. There will be a poroporoaki (time of final farewells) from 8.00am to 11.30am. A service of celebration will start at 1.00pm at the same venue. For those unable to attend, this service can be viewed at https://youtu.be/sZMXtLFmIg8. Everybody is welcome to either or both parts of the day.

To Lucy, Molly and families
I was so sad to hear of Richard's passing. I wasn't able to see Richard in the last year or two as I was quite unwell for a period there.

Nevertheless earlier I did get see Richard reasonably often, at a period that he was able to hold a conversation.

He was a good mate when we could hang out together, at the College, in his homes and visiting him in Stoke, where I could push him around the railway reserve and share fresh air, such a pity it had to stop.

Richard was such a good dad and husband you and Molly will be so sad, and miss him so very much.

Richard is such a treasure for all of us he has left such wonderful abundance of music for all the people of Aotearoa.

Love and best wishes from the Stones family to all the Nunns.
