Hi Sari,We received the tragic news of Paul's death yesterday and Sharon and I cannot imagine the shock that you,Tom, Maggie,William and Patrick must be in.We have spent the last day so saddened but feeling so glad we reconnected several years back while in Nelson to see family and the phone call when Paul said come over right now and spending a great evening, then few days together. That was a family get together as good as any thanks to you all .On our last visit we left with a carload of stuff from Paul's garden we laughed all the way to the coast at how Paul had morphed into a country farmer-a long way from being Altar Boys together for Father Cashman, surviving St Pat's,surviving having to go with Sharon's girlfriends so there would be a foursome. When Paul called late one night a couple of years ago(not his strong suit)to tell us of HIS first grandchild he was so absolutely full of joy,my memory of that conversation will last forever .Rest in Peace beautiful and honest friend -you have left a standard to be lived up to .Thankyou Gordon &Sharon Bateup Alanna Erica Scott & Meghan

It was with sadness I heard about Paul's passing from Terry and Debbie. We hadn't seen each other for nigh on 45 years however we were good chums at St Pats college. We hung around together with other Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt dayboy mates over the weekends and shared some great memorable times together having fun and dare I say getting into the odd bit of trouble. Condolences to all the family from the St Pats dayboys gang. Richard Ellerington and others

Our thoughts are with you Sari and family. We had many wonderful times growing up with Paul in Wellinton. It was great to see Paul in Nelson, share his stories of farming life and talk to the boys about diving adventures. Paul is a very special husband, dad and grandad. His humour, warmth and style are unforgettable. Love from Gooza, Bryony, Kate and David.
