On November 29, 2016, at Nelson Region Hospice, aged 86 years. Loved father and father-in-law of Linda and Derek, Raewyn and Bryce, Robin and Keith, Wendy and Kerry, Sue and Merv (all in Australia), Rose and Bill, Esme and David, Gordon and Donna, Craig and Michelle (all in New Zealand), and grandfather and great-grandfather to all his grandchildren.

At Vern's request a private cremation has taken place.
