Very sad to hear of the loss of Simon. Great memories of working with him on the Heaphy track for a summer many years ago. Such a vibrant, happy, intelligent young man. Will remember him as he was in that photo you have shared. Love to Karin, Andrew, Patrick and family.

Simon and I were part of a large group of friends who spent the last couple of years having fun together at Onslow College in Wellington.
A little after that I was offered a job down at Nelson Lakes National Park as a track worker. I contacted Simon as I knew he had done something similar on the Heaphy track. He knew the area, (and the people which really helped us to find accommodation) became interested and ended up joining me for the six months that the job lasted.
A somewhat recurring theme when I read the online memories is vehicles. Simon had three when we were in St Arnaud, a beautiful Rover 2000 (probably 60s) a Desoto truck (probably 50s) either brought off or with his Uncle Nick, and an astonishing Woolsly 6/90 he spotted in an old shed just beside the Owen River Taven. We towed the Woolsly back to St Arnaud ( the truck wasn´t just good for weekend trips to Nelson) to park in another shed just on Tetotal flats, I suspect it never left that shed.
Love the photo posted by Andy Beaston that's the Simon I remember.
My thoughts are with you Karin Andrew, Patrick, and Ang

I'm so very sorry to hear of Simon's unexpected passing. I initially knew him through being an Observer myself. Although we never worked on the same vessel together, our paths would cross every now and then. Biggest sympathies to the Beatson family.

Tena koe Beatson whanau,
So sorry to hear of the loss of Simon.
I was one of Simon's Observer colleagues and later was based in the office sending Simon and other Observers like him out to sea. Simon was a great guy to work alongside and to have work for us. He was always happy to get our work done, and always happy to be heading home to family and friends after a hard trip away. He will be missed by many.
My condolences for your loss.

What a shock it was to hear this sad news a few days ago. Simon and I got to know each other when we worked together on the Oyang 77 many years ago.
Simon had a charisma about him like no one else I know.
He was always happy.
I will remember him for his love of European cars (especially Peugeots), and restoring old boats.
Having a glass of merlot for you tonight mate.
Rest in peace.

I first met Simon 18 yrs ago as an observer. Although our paths didn't cross each other often I found Simon to be a smiley, kind and respectful man. I am so sorry that this has happen to you and your family and hope in these times of sorrow that you may see God's light on the path ahead when the road you walk is grey and full of pain.
RIP Simon you will be sadly missed by all.

I never actually met Simon but feel as though I know him through our common interest of Peugeot cars
We talked not only of cars, but many other worldly topics ( usually later in the evening ) when he was back on shore
My condolences to his wife and family for this untimely and premature loss
