I got to know Roger in the early to mid 70s, at Mount Cook.
I was part of a group who skied at Ohau, camping on the lakeside, in the warmest of sleeping bags. Up in the morning and off skiing.
Also lived at Mt Cook village. He was always so dedicated to his work, and that clearly progressed to National recognition.
If anything he was the most 'authentic' individual one could ever know.
He put so much into his mountain, flora and fauna life.
I was shocked to find this out 3 days ago, March 2026.
Sincere condolences to Gerald.
RIP Roger.

Roger was the epitome of the people who I worked with at Okarito Gorsebusters. A dedicated, passionate environmentalist and hard worker. He came off the water with a smile on his face, knowing a job was well done that day. He was also one of the many who would pitch in and do the dishes at the end of the day (where they got the energy from I don't know) which us tired kitchen crew appreciated. He will be sadly missed by all who met him there. To his family, thank you for sharing him with us for those few weeks and my deepest condolences. It's not a cliche to say he will be sadly missed.
