I came to Nelson in the late seventies and was lucky enough to score a job in the lab at Nelson Hospital working with Paul. I say working with Paul because I never felt he was above me in status, I like to think we were a great team. Here I was bright eyed and bushy tailed from the big smoke of Wellington hospital working in a smaller hospital and being given a lot more responsibility than I had ever had before. Paul, encouraged me, trusted me and gave me plenty of responsibility. We used to arrive in the morning and as we were reading the cultures from the day before, we discussed the current news at great length. Looking back it was probably the best job I ever had. After a few years, I gave birth to Baby Graeme, I had some time off for maternity leave, but was approached before my leave was over by Paul wanting me to come back to work. Diane, who had baby Christopher at that stage was cajoled into caring for Baby Graeme for me. People used to think she had twins! It was such a kind and generous thing for Diane to do and I am very greatful to her, Graeme was cared for in a lovely home with a Brother and two big sisters Anna and Rebecca. This continued until we moved back to Wellington, to be closer to my parents. I will always think of those times as very special and have always appreciated the support and kindness that Paul and Diane showed to me. I will miss you Paul and will miss catching up with you on my infrequent trips to Nelson. Lots and lots of Love to Diane , Anna, Rebecca, Chris and their families Arohanui.
