Nigel ANNABLE Obituary

ANNABLE,
Nigel Rithven:
Aged 56, of Atawhai, died suddenly in the early hours of May 8, 2017. Nigel was born in Kilburn, Derbyshire, England in 1960. He spent eight years in the Royal Navy as a submariner and often reminisced of his time spent on HMS Valiant during the Falklands war. After leaving the service, he moved to the United States, and in 1986 married Luanne (of Minnesota). For twenty years, he followed Luanne, as her military career took them up and down the American West Coast. During this time, Nigel studied, earned a Masters degree in Business, at the University of Washington (Seattle); and then went on to a career as a computer software engineer until 2004, when he was laid-off work during the dot-com bust. In 2005, looking for a quieter and an increased quality of life, Nigel and Luanne moved to Nelson, New Zealand. After a brief working interlude, Nigel settled into retirement, yet he was never idle. He always had a project on the go - gardening/landscaping or making other home improvements. When he wasn't hard at work, he enjoyed motorcycles, Motor Superbike races; bicycles, professional bicycle races; Formula 1, American football and rare broadcasts of his home-town Derby County Rams football. Nigel is survived and dearly loved by his wife, Luanne (of 31+ years). He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Annable (of Birmingham, England); father, Sidney; and loving grandmother, Ann (of Kilburn, Derbyshire, England). A small, quiet gathering will be scheduled at a later date.

Luanne, So sorry to hear about your loss! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

P.S. This is Becky (Mixter/Shafer). So sorry as well that we lost touch after being in Alameda and the CG. I have very fond memories of the time we spent together in Seattle while Nigel was studying for his degree. May all the memories that you have with him keep you strong and bring comfort.

I remember Nigel taking me out on Moto-Guzzi up the A38 Kilburn to Derby at speed. A real treat for a young lad then. Nigel was the coolest friend of my older brothers and one who had a great influence over my decision later to join the Royal Navy myself. A true friend of the whole family, we are all sad he left far too soon.

Although you never knew me, I had the pleasure of serving with Nigel or "Annie" as we affectionately knew him. He was a great guy, loved his Jethro Tull and will always be remembered. Condolences to you all.
I live in the UK and the Facebook site HMS/M Valiant is awash with messages from ex colleagues of his.

Dear Nigel

We first met when I was 16 years old. Hard to believe I know. We had been in touch recently regarding the Valiant Association which was started by you really. That Facebook site has brought so many people together my friend and that you should be proud of. I will always remember opening your locker in Pembroke. Contents 1x leather bike jacket 1x times Jeans and tee shirt last but not least one Triumph Bonneville engine. Check you thought that was normal. What can I say. Fair winds mate. Say hello to Hagar and Frankie Rann when you get there. Peace.

I am very sorry to hear of Nigel's untimely death Luanne. I was one of the teachers he worked with when he did his teaching practice at Nayland College. We had many interesting talks on a wide range of topics. I was always in awe of his IT skills and knowledge, and learnt a lot through working with him. All the best.
