Kia ora Hilary

My most sincere condolences to you and the family on John's passing.

John was a wonderful man of many talents who it was a privilege to know. He leaves a particular legacy not only to Te Tau Ihu but as a bridge between te ao Mori and te ao Pkeh. Another legacy is the inspiration of his partnership with you.

And typical of John's generosity is his donation to medical science.

It felt good to have you as near neighbours for a number of years.

My very best wishes at this sad time.

To Hilary, Adam, Luke, Susan and whanau, it is with great sadness that I read of Johns Passing, as a young man hanging out with Luke, throwing stones at each other for fun under the collingwood street bridge, as we both had good throwing arms, and getting up to all sorts of other mischief, John was always someone i looked up to and admired and he was very quick to let us know if we had crossed a line and if we did we only did it once, he had a look that could stop a freight train. reflecting on those times he was a fatherly figure that i didn't have in my life so I have nothing but fond memories and Aroha. Rest in Peace John. Kia Kaha Mitchells

Dear Hilary and family
I am sad to learn of John's death.
He was a great man and the work that he and you did together is an amazing accomplishment.
The latest book is a triumph both artistically and historically and the earlier works are uniquely and scholarly important.
I will always be in awe of your together work. I hope your pride in those achievements gives you some comfort in the coming months.

Dear Hilary and all your whanau, it is so sad to learn of John's passing. Wishing you much strength with the big hiatus, John is leaving behind. Memories of John linger on as an unforgettable and interesting part of my work at the Netherlands Embassy, especially around the commemorations of Abel Tasman, with amongst others the seminar in Nelson and 'The First Encounter' in Golden Bay, where John's participation was of huge value, as well as Hilary's. R.I.P. John.
