Today I discovered the death of Sister Mary Scanlon. As I have lot touch with my then colleagues living down here at Lake Hwea I was saddened to find out she has died when I Googled her.
Sister Mary Scanlon was my mentor and support when I accepted the job as Education Director at Mary Potter Hospice 31 years ago. “ Call me Mary” she said, “ and I don’t wear a habit anymore”. I was at ease at once , and she gave me a marvellous orientation - in at the deep end with her advice. Always supportive and easy to talk to. I continued to keep in touch with her- me on her Xmas making list, and she on mine. The thing that she told me stands out more than anything else is “ the person dying gets your care, and you get the opportunity to do the caring. It’s a relationship of reciprocity”.
Rest in peace Mary.

I remember with great love some special times with Sr Mary Scanlon at Island Bay, when I was a very new Catholic , after suffering a tragedy. The love and care and quiet support I received at different times from her and the other Sisters is something that i will NEVER forget . Josie Dickson

Dear Mary, I am so proud of you , for the person you are and for all that you achieved. I have such fond memories of my days as a Nurse aide at Calvary Hospital in Wellington before starting my training at Wellington Hospital. Lovely memories of Sister Raye Boyle and all the Sisters I worked with. From: Cousin - Margaret Chiaroni ( nee Power )

I am 99% sure you are the Sister Mary Scanlon from Mary Potter Hospice Wellington .If you are and i am right then you are the wonderful Sister who nursed my beautiful courageous younger 25 year old Brother Donald Williams during his 8 weeks at Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington and took amazing care of him right up until and after he passed from a aggressive brain tumour in 1988.At the time it was extremly rare to have someone so young die and you were all devestated. You supported my Parents and my Brothefs and myself greatly during this time and for a number of years after.i am and will be eternally greatful to you for the rest of my life.I am sorry we lost touch .Go well Sister Mary Theresa as i knew you .You have more than earned your rest i n Gods house
.ls if you see my Donald tell him i love and miss him

Thank you for my first bible that I got from you at my first year attending St Catherines. Without such devoted guidance within the faith I would not have found my way.
