Malcolm DOUGLASS Obituary

DOUGLASS, Malcolm:
Malcolm died in Nelson on Friday, March 4, 2022, aged 90 years, after a long struggle with cancer. Dearly loved and loving husband of Judie for almost 65 years; loving father of Joanna and the late Nicky; beloved grandfather of Luke and Bridie, and great-grandfather of George and Casey. His energy and enthusiasm and boundless good humour were underpinned by the steadfast principles of his Quaker upbringing. Professionally he was recognised and admired throughout New Zealand for his work in traffic engineering and town planning, especially in Christchurch, where his efforts in preserving first the university buildings for the Arts Centre, and later the Theatre Royal, are a splendid legacy. In accordance with Malcolm's wishes, a private cremation has been held.

Malcolm was a friend and mentor who inspired me to pursue a Transportation Engineer and Urban Planner career.
He shaped Christchurch, both its urban frame and through the purchase of the Art Centre (Old University) from the Government.
A life well lived rest in peace Malcolm

Having just learnt of this, I send my sympathy. Malcolm and Judy contributed in a major way to the community....Judy through her talents and energy in drama . Malcolm through his commitment to public life whether as leading the charge to save the Canterbury University from being demolished to make way for a car park for Christchurch tourists....!!! So came the wonderful Arts Centre and thank you Malcolm for that. He was involved in many more things, and whether as a volunteer or through his profession...and even became the first CEO of the Canterbury Regional Council... So a multi faceted contribution to the community throughout his life.. A full, energetic and rich life.
