Sorry to read this. John and Nola were long time friends of my parents, Henry and Norma. Thoughts are with you all at this time.

So sorry to hear we no longer have John with us. Such a good man, involved in so many community groups. Will be missed.

John was one of those modest unsung heroes of our community. Despite a hearing loss of 80% he worked for years on the Hearing Nelson committee especially lobbying for subtitles on TVNZ. He often roped in his mates on other community organisations to help out Hearing Nelson in projects or fund raising. Always willing to do any and everything he would also bring along his trusty carpet cleaner to Hearing House and do the job himself. The kindest man always generous with both his time and energy.

John Harwood was a tireless advocate for the hearing impaired community in Nelson/Tasman and in New Zealand as a whole, as evidenced by the many positions - local and national - that he held. But the official record tells only part of the story. Warm and compassionate he was always ready to lend a hand, whether with menial (but necessary) cleaning tasks, with applying his practical skills and experience to asset maintenance or with advocating at the highest level on behalf of the hearing impaired. For many years he was a mainstay of Hearing Nelson and he will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, John

The Board members of the Hearing Association Nelson were deeply saddened to learn of John´s passing. John had a long and valued association with our organisation and contributed generously over many years. In recognition of his service, he was awarded Life Membership of our Nelson Association in 2008. John also served as President on several occasions: 2000-03, 2006-09, and 2015-17. He also served as the National President from 2010-2013.
John was a familiar and much-respected presence at our AGMs, and we will miss both his thoughtful input and his warm sense of humour. He will be fondly remembered for his integrity, dedication and strong commitment to supporting people with hearing impairment.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to John´s family. Rest in peace, John.
