My first meeting with John was about 1963. John was teaching at Lake Rotoiti, and would drive into Nelson to coach our 8th grade team. That was dedication, and many boys benefitted from John's dedication. In the early 70s,I had the pleasure of John coaching the Nelson Club senior reserve team. John was a great man,who gave a lot,and didn't expect anything in return. A sad loss .

A very special man. A great teacher in my rebellious phase at WIS and one with a long memory. Very helpful in guiding me into teaching-because he remembered me! My sincere sympathy.

To Trish and family,
My heartfelt condolences to you all. I was very sad to hear of Goody's passing. He played a large part in my junior sporting years and Goody was always around when it counted. Later in my first senior game for Nelson, Goody was my coach. I had great respect for him as a person and mentor and I credit him for guiding me through those early years as a senior player.
It is with a heavy heart and not without tears that I am writing and sharing in your loss.
Goody always got the best out of me and it was easier to push myself because of me admiration and respect for him.
"I will never forget your, "Hennie Mullers" and your booming voice from the grandstand disputing the ref! But most of all your words of wisdom and just you as a person who shared part of my life".
La pace ela benedizione Del mio amico,
Peace and blessings my friend,
Kevin Gargiulo.

Tena Koe e te rangatira John ara Mr Goodman. Will never forget the influence you had on us all at Lake Rotoiti School in Nelson in the early 60s. A very talented and fit teacher that I remember you running from the Kikiwa village down to the Abilene farm gate and back. You cared very much for all the children under your care. What great days they were. As a former student of Lake Rotoiti our family will never forget you. Moe atu ra e te papa, Ma te Atua e whakakaha tou whanau i tenei wa pouri.
