It is with great regret I didn't make contact with Ira or one of the boys earlier when I realised on reading of Ira's war exploits that both he and my father Bob Healey served together in the Pacific, WWII. I have a framed pic of all the boys taken, I believe, in the New Hebrides before they went into action for the first time.

Mum and I have just heard of the sad passing of Ira. We had a lovely chat with him just a few weeks ago and had a laugh or two... he never forgot us even after dad passed away a few years ago. dad and ira worked together at wakefield post office and dad would always say ira was one of lifes true gentlemen and indeed he was. thoughts are with you all...Anne and Julie Blair

It was a privilege to be your friend Ira. You taught me so much on our Friday get together about Wakefield in its former years. I never came home after being with you and not having leant something having had a dram or three. Last Friday I learned about the beginnings of the Wakefield Fire Brigade. My Fridays will never be the same again and will have to find a alternative activity. God bless you Young Fella

Condolences to Stuart, John and families. My lifetime of fond memories of Ira started when he worked in the Westport Post Office with my parents, Ross and Alma Kirkwood back in the 40s. He visited regularly especially to the Bach during whitebait season. Even after Mum and Dad died he continued to keep in touch and also white baited. Mum was particularly sad to say goodbye when we farewelled Joan in Wakefield. The solitaire board Ira made and gave me is still much used by family and friends as is the bowl and set of drinks mats. It is not only the family for whom his departure will bring change, also old friends. The end of a long and treasured era.

Thinking of you John, Stuart and extended families at this very sad time. I will miss visiting 'Uncle Mac' whenever I'm up in Nelson and the birthday phone call from him every January. My thoughts will be with you all tomorrow, I'm sorry that I can't be there. It was so lovely that I got the chance to catch up several weeks ago. He will be dearly missed by everyone. With much love, Marlene, Andrew, Louis and Ella. xx
