We first met Eugene in 1999 when we wanted a builder to renovate a character home we bought in the Port Hills. The structure had been extensively compromised having been turned into 3 flats and we wanted to restore it to its former glory. We had a general idea of what we wanted to achieve and Eugene agreed to build what we wanted but as the work progressed he kept coming up with creative ideas which we happily incorporated into the build. The renovation was extensive (and expensive!) but his ideas were innovative and reflective of his creativity and craftmanship. He was equally at home doing industrial type structural work or that which required detail and a fine finish so he was truly a master builder.
We maintained our association with him up until we left Nelson 2 years ago. In that time he worked on rental properties we had as well as our home in Cable Bay. No job was too big for him and he was never defeated by problematic issues that arose in the course of the work, bringing innovative thinking and practical solutions that successfully resolved these problems. Given the length of our association and his exemplary performance it was perhaps natural we came to regard him as a friend so it came as a considerable shock to learn from him earlier this year that he was terminally ill. Always mindful of his diet and health generally he seemed the most unlikely candidate at his age for aggressive cancer. We of course knew his family and witnessed his devotion to them, especially his mother, and our belated condolences to them all. He enriched our lives through our association with him and he will not be forgotten by our family.

We are both so very sad to see that Eugene has passed away. Loved how he used to give everyone nicknames. We were Montis (the full monty for phil) and I was Anna banana. Vicky was Beccles and genie the beanie and millie the tilly. Eugene was a craftsman in his building work and he always had his dog with him. He had a quirky sense of humour. Sadly gone far too soon and too young. Sadly we lost touch in the last few years too. RIP Eugene
