When I was 11 in standard 4 at Auckland Point, Eric (I didn't know him as Eric then) came to take our exam and tell us what was required at Nelson Intermediate when we got there in 1967. As he left after collecting all the papers, I was in the back of class probably talking. He turned and said "you won't do that when you're in my class Ching", all the class turned to look at me with startled looks on their faces, "how does he know you" My 15 minutes of fame. Those were great days when teachers were respected are sadly missing today.
Cheers old chap, we are missing your kind.

I met Eric when he was a principal in Nelson. I thoroughly enjoyed his insights and his lovely company and always thought when I spent time with him that it was wonderful to do so with someone who was in teaching for all the right reasons. My condolences to his family.
