Catharine SALMON Obituary

SALMON, Catharine
(née Hodson):
It is with sadness that we share the passing of our vibrant, creative, witty, loving, kind, thoughtful, passionate, and zany Catharine on March 13, 2023, at the age of 69. Her loving husband, Guy, and children Toshi, Morgana, Erin and Kinley, will greatly miss her zest for life and tender loving care. Catharine has been a prominent figure in the Nelson Arts community and served as a NMIT visual arts academic for over 3 decades. We wish to welcome all that would like to celebrate her life at Fairfield House on Sunday, June 4. catharine.salmon2b+[email protected]

Catharine was a blithe spirit who assisted me hugely during musical productions at Waimea College way back in the 70s.As others have alluded, the scope of her expertise and care were not solely focused on set design or lighting plots. She intervened on numerous occasions to calm ruffled feathers of divas, quietly suggest alternatives to the producer and calm jittery music director. May she sleep well. She certainly deserves it. An exceptional art teacher, with a great enthusiasm and depth of technical knowledge. Catharine would never say "I don't know" if asked about something, she would go away and research it and come back with answers. More importantly, she was kind, warm, genuine, intelligent, and compassionate. She made a huge impact on my learning and eventual graduation, and on the lives of many others over the years at NMIT. My condolences to her family and loved ones.

Sending my sympathy and love at the loss of Catharine.
She has had a hugely positive impact on so many people .
I was briefly a student at NMIT and she was so even handed ,kind and supportive to us .
Her calm and thoughtfulness ,her considered words spoke volumes about her .
May the special memories you hold bring comfort as you grieve the harder ones .

Catharine was such a kind and generous teacher. I only have memories of her laughing and smiling, even when us students would be driving her up the wall. We were all so fortunate to have learned from her.

My heart goes out to you all at this time. This was such a shock to read.
I will treasure all of the wonderful times - the conversations that we shared together over the years whilst I was part of your whanau looking after Toshi and Morgana.
Thinking of you all, lots of love

Catharine was an inspiration to everyone she met. I started working with Catharine in the Arts department of NMIT in 2011 where she welcomed me into the team with the most embrasing, encouraging and loving way. I quickly realised that this was just her way, and that she would pour the same amount of time and energy into every student she encountered. She would nurture her students from their first day in class, right through to them graduating. Her passion for art and teaching was only equaled by the passion she had for her family. She would proudly tell stories about her children, while beaming with pride and love. Catharine's zeal for life was infectious and she was always there for anyone who needed her. I'm honoured to have had Catharine in my life as I know many are.
May God's blessings be on the family at this time and may Catharine's joy and legacy forever be in the lives of her family for generations to come.

Catherine and I both worked at NMIT in different departments so I knew her to wave and smile to each other. One magical night many years ago we sat on a couch at a party and talked for over 2 hours. We learnt so much about each other, our families, our loves, our choices, our beliefs. At the end we hugged and spoke of how great it was that we had connected. Perhaps Catherine was like that with everyone but I have always had ( and will continue to have) a special place in my heart for her.
I am blessed to have met her and to have known a little about her
I am very sad for your loss but she will live on in her family I have no doubt. Maree
