A true gentleman and scholar. Both he and Margaret were terrific people. I first met them in the 1980's, and remained in touch with them until recently. My best wishes to his family. Both Bruce and Margaret will forever be remembered fondly by me, as the wonderful people they were.

Bruce was a brilliant, world-wide respected scientist. He installed the first computers at the University of Canterbury, and turned his fine intellect into writing excellent accounts of New Zealand history, often with much needed correctives. He was a great man.May he rest in peace.

Farewell to a patriot. It was an honour to work with Bruce over the past six years in the distribution of his recent publications. Some of his qualities which come to mind in relation to his research into early New Zealand history include: challenge, intellect, scientific approach, integrity, veracity, thoroughness, rigour, insight, dedication, and courage. The giant oak tree has fallen.
