We'll always remember Arch meeting us resplendent in his Barclay kilt when we arrived off the ferry from Wellington in 2012. He was welcoming, hospitable, generous: so pleased to show us round the country he knew and loved so well. Our condolences and best wishes to all his family and friends. Our paths crossed in the North and South Island over many years, first when I was new to journalism in 1964 and later in Nelson at the Nelson Evening Mail. Arch was extremely helpful to me, despite the fact we worked for rival publications. Arch was the rural reporter at the Mail when I came across the strait to the Nelson Mail and yet again was to me a valued member of the reporters room.
