Dear Lois - I am saddened to see of Alf's passing, which I have only seen now. I am so sorry for your loss. It will be a huge adjustment without him. He was a honey. Mum thought the world of him too. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Love Di xoxo

I had the pleasure of working with Alf at the New Plymouth savings Bank as it was then in the late 50 and early 60 times. He appreciated humour and was always able to help when needed. I have very pleasant memories of those times Ian Finer

We were sorry to learn of Alf´s recent passing and our condolences are extended to all the Smith family. Many happy memories remain with us, from the Sallie days where Dale shared so many happy occasions and more recently as a work colleague of Rodney at the TSB for many years, until retirement. Always a true gentlemen Alf´s happy and warm demeanor are fondly remembered and our thoughts are with you all.

First of all, my deepest condolences to you Lois and your family for the loss of a fine husband and father
I first met Alf when our family arrived in NZ from England in 1951. Over the years we were involved in many aspects of life together, but mostly through the Salvation Army and the TSB Bank.
Played in New Plymouth Salvation Army Band for many years - he on Euphonium, me on 1st Baritone.
Sang in the NP Male Voice Party together. We were Corps Treasurer and Corps Secretary respectively for many years.
Played cricket together in Rivals Cricket Team for many years.
Played in a Table Tennis team with Alf and younger brother Doug together with Ron Hareb in the local B Grade Competitions.
Both of us worked for the TSB Bank for many years before our respective retirements.
Alf had a quiet disposition but was always willing to help with anything that needed to be done, always there in the background - he was not a "limelight" person at all. He was a man of integrity, and was totally reliable, and a good friend. He had a great "head" for figures. He was a very fit person and enjoyed regularly running with the New Plymouth Harriers Group.
Thanks Alf for your friendship - we enjoyed many good times over the years.

I went to Vogeltown School, New Plymouth, at the same time as Alf. We were classmates from day one till I left New Plymouth Boys High when I was fifteen. Alf was a quiet student but friendly with everyone. He was a good student who could calculate, in his head, faster than the teacher could write the problem on the blackboard. As soon as Mr Burton finished chalking up the puzzle, he would turn and say, "what's the answer, Smith?" Everyone else laughed because we knew he had it.
The last time I spoke to Alf was probably 20 years ago and I think her was living in Oakura. We were never mates but we were always friends!
